The Pictures Are Pretty; Black Artistry Past, Present, and In Between

A Session by Nancy Tolson

About this Session

Children read visual art before they know words. Picture books can be described as a childs first art piece. It is important for Black children to see themselves in these books in order to know that they too are recognized in this literary world of art. Through library and museum connections Black children could have the opportunity to expand their understanding of Black visual artists. From Lois Mailou Jones to Bryan Collier, this presentation will celebrate how Black artists have the ability to create cultural awareness, critical thinking skills, and literacy.
