Identity Politics: The Weightiness of Black Womanhood in LIS

A Session by Brittani Sterling , Vivian Bynoe, MLIS , Kay Coates, PMC, MILS and Dylitchrous Thompson, MLIS, M.Ed

About this Session

Kimberle Crenshaw theorized that Black Womens experiences with discrimination cannot be pigeonholed into one category of either race or gender. Women of Color are constantly in a space of intersectionality and deal with multiple identities in their personal and professional lives (Crenshaw, 1989, p. 140). More recently, scholars have applied the framework of intersectionality to the LIS profession. Black women in the profession deal with the weight of intersectionality while navigating a field that is predominantly White. This panel will discuss our experiences as women of color, academic librarians and solutions we have developed to address intersectionality in the library.
