From the Root to the Fruit: Decolonizing Open Educational Resources (OERs) to Facilitate Culturally Relevant Pedagogy
A Session by Lamonica Sanford and Shaundra Walker
About this Session
The benefits of OERS often center around student success, a term that incorporates cost savings, increased, retention, progression and graduation and similar metrics (Colvard, Watson and Park, 2018). The presentation will argue that in addition to the aforementioned benefits of OERS, the use of OERs that incorporate the voices of scholars of color and reflect the experiences of an increasingly diverse student body set the stage for the use of culturally relevant pedagogy. Gloria Ladson-Billings (1995) suggests that the drive for culturally relevant pedagogy is to educate the whole student by recruiting educators who value diversity, inclusivity, and social justice.
