Contesting Covers: Critical Race Theory, Cover Design, and Images of Black Boys
A Session by DeAnza Williams PhD
About this Session
Examination of the representation of African American characters in youth literature has been ongoing for decades; however, as Kimura (2019) noted, few studies have been conducted in diversity on young adult cover design in terms of race in visual representations. This lightning session explores African American teen males' depiction on young adult book covers published in the 21st century using visual image analysis and critical race theory.
