About this Session
"This program will highlight the work of Ann Allen Shockley, an activist-librarian, who advocated for Black special collections in her writing and her research. Shockley is a contemporary of E.J. Josey and is well known for co-editing the Handbook of Black Librarianship with Josey (1977). Her life and work will be centered within the context of special collections in the libraries of historically Black colleges and universities and will consider the rise of Black Studies programs that emerged in the late 1960s.
